Moving Images
From 24 October 2025
ALBERTINA MODERN, VIENNA
How did color enter photography? This presentation affords insights into the development of photography in color with outstanding works from the ALBERTINA’s own holdings. It draws an impressive arc from the 19th century’s initial experimental techniques to the viable analog color photography that emerged during the 1950s. Color photography was revolutionized by milestones such as the development of the interference process in 1891 and the Lumière brothers’ early 20th century autochromes, with various simultaneously employed photochemical and three-color processes exemplifying the broad array of approaches to producing color images. True Colors thematizes contexts in which historical color photography was employed, and the effects of popular color photographic processes on the culture of images during the 20th century’s first half.
The exhibition is on view at the ALBERTINA MODERN Museum from 24 January 2025 to 21 April 2025.
